I chatted with an old friend earlier today. He was an old friend from my old neighbourhood back in KK and we recalled many of our childhood memories. Especially how we used to wrestling and pretending to be an Ultraman fighting with a monster. Well, maybe if wrestling was famous during our times, we would have pretend we're on wrestling but it wasn't, so there we go playing Ultraman, Power Rangers, Ninja Turtle and etc. Then we recalled running was the most common thing we do as a child. We barely walk back then. Wearing slippers were totally off the routine. I recalled we only used slippers when we play this game called 'Kayu Tiga'.
As a kid, you could hardly except no for everything. Just remember how clever you were stealing the door key and escape out of the house when you were suppose to be grounded. Even when your friend under estimated you, you tend to rise up and prove that your nothing like they think even though you they were right about you. Just remember the moments where you took your first cigarette with no fear and worries, walking on the side of the deep and wide drains, climbing to the top of a tree which was like 8 to 9 feet above you, climbing those electric poles, trespassing prohibited area, playing with explosive things, create your own weapons, down hill surfing on coconut stems, riding bike down the stairs, jump down instead of walking down the stairs... it's just too many kids stuff we did in the past. We afraid of nothing but our parents (or the boogieman or anjing gila)!
Eventually, we grow up and we also learn lots of new things along the way. Starting from "don't talk to strangers" or "be a good and nice kid". Because of these two oldest lesson we learn, most of us are now afraid to even look at scary looking stranger and we also tend to act nice towards people JUST to impress them. These two lessons put us in the capable of living life free with no worries as a child (except for our courage to approach the apek aiskrim). Even worse is when a kid is telling you that smoking can get you cancer while you were enjoying your cigarette, and you just tell the kid, "Who cares? We're all going to die anyway!" And because we learn too much sometimes causes us to be so timid in life. If you used to climb up a 9 feet trees and your parents told you that you might fall down and break your neck and keep telling you that very often, you will turn into an acrophobia (afraid of heights), and sometime because your parents preach too much about safety, you turn into an annoying adviser among your friends.
Don't you know smoking can give you stroke? Don't you know drugs make you high and forget everything? Don't you know clubbing exposed you to dangerous strangers? Don't you know wearing mini clothes could trigger dangerous man to hurt you? Don't you know stealing is wrong? Don't you know that driving with speed could cause you accidents? There are too many don'ts in life if you realize.
According to my old neighbourhood friend which I'll just refer to as Aboy (bukan nama sebenar atau samaran!), "Damn I hate all the don'ts and think it's just turning people into a paranoid sicko. The don'ts make people see only danger in almost everything without giving you a chance to at least have fun out of it. For instance (his saying) casual sex. Most people don't even know what casual sex is (I guess that includes me...)! All people want now is a serious relationship, love and marriage before deciding to have sex! Just because HIV spreads from wild and un-safe sex, doesn't mean all wild sex will conclude with HIV! Another thing is, what is the thing about declining your children request of wanting to buy vehicles for campus transportation purpose? Not all campus youth will use their vehicle to race or drunk driving that will lead to death. Somehow I just can't figure out how they do the thinking?"
Alright Aboy. I get your point. Not all things have bad endings. It's just the matter of how well you can manage yourself and how much your parents can trust and rely on you, but not everyone's good if you know what I mean. You might do something with good intention but often bad and stupid things happen from good intention. It is not caused by good intention gone wrong or bad. It's just that people tend to forget about their good intention which resulted to bad things in the end. It's simple as this example. Your folk bought you a car for campus transportation and you didn't take your car for a night drive for the first 3 months at least. Then your friends invited you to a club. You rejected the first time until you fail to decline them on their 7th invitation. First time clubbing was terrible especially knowing that you have to walk out of the club with lots of smells. 2nd time was OK, third time was GOOD, 4th time was GREAT and on the 5th time it is you who invited your friends along offering your car as the transportation. After many times clubbing, you got drifted away from your so called good intention path. You simply forgot until something bad happen that awakes you and bring back all the original good intention back into your head, and trying relate with the sweet talks that you will have to tell your parents before they get so mad at you! "Ingatkan mo lepak ja buang tension, x tau pula kawan bawa minum. Itu la termabuk dan accident..."
In my own way of taking advices and adapting them, I don,t think I'm being a paranoid or whatsoever. I'm just being careful and aware of any troubles to come. I mean, I never got really scared of talking to strangers. Common, if I am being a paranoid, I would've not talk to the delivery boy, kind janitors, lecturers, securities and all that. Maybe there are some people out there that are paranoid of things but I don't think advices caused them to be that way. There must be something else, like a tragedy perhaps?
What I'm trying to say to conclude my opinion is, advices and the don'ts are meant to make you aware of yourself to the potentially dangerous surrounding so that you can manage your own independent life more efficiently and safely. But, your opinion is still yours Aboy and I have my own. So, I'll stick to mine and leave yours to you okay? Cheers!

in my opinion, the word of 'DONT' or 'JANGAN' are of course created with a good reason..
they are the easiest way for other people whom concern about us to keep us from danger, to keep us always on the right track, to protect us from any harm..
so, i dont think that 'DONT' word is such a bad thing..hmm~
